why me?

Anyone can become a victim of coercive control, there is not necessarily one “type.” However, victim survivors often share a similar set of traits.

To be clear, not all of these are character flaws… many are traits that non-predatory people form connections based on. The characterlogically disordered people that are behind narcissistic abuse, just exploit these traits to gain control over their victims.

  1. High Empathy and Compasssion (they use guilt and empathy)
  2. Strong Sense of Responsibility (they use internalized blame)
  3. Loyalty and Commitment (they entrap people in cycles)
  4. Trusting and Open (they gather and weaponize information)
  5. High Blame and Self Doubt (they use gaslighting)
  6. Conflict Avoidance (they escalate control with little pushback)
  7. Prior Trauma (they normalize unstable or controlling dynamics)
  8. Strong Desire for Connection and Belonging (they use love bombing)
  9. High Achievement and Competence (they seek admirable partners and work to slowly dismantle their confidence)
  10. Life Circumstances that Increase Dependency (they use reliance)
